Learn all about the ongoing efforts to define open-source AI and how to make it a powerful tool to help attain the SDGs by putting responsible practices and SDG relevance at the core of AI DPGs. We will start with an introduction to open-source AI and why it matters, especially in the context of global inequalities and democratizing AI’s benefits. We will then dive into the collaborative process of defining open-source AI, spearheaded by the Open Source Initiative, and share the current version of the definition of open-source AI (OSAI). Building on top of this, we will discuss how to ensure the ethical and responsible openness of AI - a key aspect of AI systems as digital public goods (DPGs) and share relevant examples. The session will end with a participatory discussion of the core challenges to defining and implementing open-source AI.

Lea Gimpel, the Director of AI of the Digital Public Good Alliance, will introduce open-source AI and explain how it matters. Mer Joyce, the facilitator of the Open Source Initiative’s co-design process to define OSAI, will present that collaborative process and share the current version of the Open Source AI Definition (OSAID). Lea will then discuss her organization’s work to build ethical and responsible AI practices on top of the OSAID. The session will end with a participatory discussion of the core challenges to defining and implementing open-source AI.
